Project Approach
Having a physical concept in front of you can be helpful at times. Our entire game was prototyped on a 2 by 2 meter piece of paper for this project. Prior to arranging post-it notes as potential zones and pathways, we first drew a grid across the entire sheet of paper.
The process was fascinating and incredibly flexible.
It was good to sit with my fellow level designers in a room with a large piece of paper that was ready to be filled with life.
In the end, we were all very pleased with the paper design and confident enough to move on to the next phase, which involved blocking it out in our own engine. This showed that we only needed very few iterations; the carefully considered paper design served as an excellent basis that allowed us to just observe and replicate the paper design into our engine.
